In 2023, Intuit introduced TurboTax Business, its inaugural online tax software tailored for small business owners, including S corporations, partnerships, and multi-member LLCs.

Customers can choose to file their taxes independently with access to a tax expert for guidance, or opt for a tax expert to handle their filing from start to finish. Additionally, we integrated QuickBooks into our TurboTax product to automate the transfer of tax information, simplifying the tax process for small business owners more than ever before. The primary objectives for this project were to validate the proof of concept and generate $500,000 in revenue.

To enable a tax expert to file and complete a tax return, customers are required to upload all their necessary tax documents. However, this step presents significant challenges for users. Our qualitative study revealed business owners frequently struggle with the collection of tax documents for several reasons:

  1. Lack of Awareness: Users may not know the location of these documents, which complicates the process of gathering them.

  2. Uncertainty About Requirements: Users often are unsure about which documents are needed, leading to confusion and potential delays.

  3. Negative Perceptions: There is generally a negative sentiment towards the process of organizing and sharing documents online, which can deter users from completing this task.

Additionally, analytics indicated a high percentage of user dropoff at the stage of using the current checklist, suggesting that the process may be too cumbersome or unclear.

The study involved 9 participants aged between 25 and 45 years, with business revenues ranging from $20,000 to $174,999. Here's the revised breakdown of the steps taken:

Step 1: Generate both verbal and written questions regarding participants' current experiences with organizing documents for business taxes.

Step 2: Conduct a card sorting exercise using existing prototype fields and labels, while also giving participants the opportunity to create their own categories.

Step 3: Review the current prototype, focusing on our approach to document organization, and gather evaluative feedback from the participants.
